Series note

The Monochrome Work gathers my black-and-white photographs from every part of the archive: the Matterhorn at first light, the Eiger's north face in cloud, the Kinderdijk windmills in mist, the station at Liège-Guillemins, a guard outside the Quirinal Palace in Rome, an old Singer sewing machine in Botswana, a storm over Rotterdam.

I don't convert to black and white to make pictures look old. I do it when colour gets in the way. Without it, a mountain ridge and a station roof come down to the same things, edges and masses and gradations of grey. A pigeon on a brick ledge can sit next to a palace guard, and a dew drop on a leaf next to the Gran Sasso at moonrise.

Because the subjects vary so much, this is the series that shows most plainly how I see. It is still growing.
