City Light

Buildings, stations, and streets in Paris, New York, Vatican City, Liège, and Ascoli Piceno.

Series note

City Light collects my architecture and street photographs from Paris, New York, Vatican City, Liège, and Ascoli Piceno. What they share is an interest in what light does to a building once the sun goes down or comes in at a low angle.

Paris appears at dusk: the Eiffel Tower and the dome of Les Invalides lit against the evening sky, a Notre-Dame gargoyle looking out toward the tower at sunset, Sacré-Cœur at night. In New York I photographed the Art Deco doors of the Chrysler Building up close and the Brooklyn Bridge at night in black and white. In Vatican City a priest walks through a band of light under St. Peter's colonnade. At Liège-Guillemins station, Calatrava's roof repeats its ribs in perfect symmetry.

In Ascoli Piceno, a small town in the Marche, the Piazza del Popolo at dusk and a portico at night show a slower side of the series. The anonymous pictures, like underpasses, a subway staircase, and a figure in an arched tunnel, show the same thing at street level: a single person and the lines of the place around them.
